South African non-profit organization – Women in IT, has announced it is accepting applications for its 2016 “Women in IT bursary.” The IT bursary is aimed at empowering young South African women entering their final year of IT or ICT studies and are seeking a career in IT.
The 2016 bursary is open to young South African women who are currently unemployed and would be entering their final year of study in an IT-related course in a South African university next year.
Women in IT gives support to young women who are financially disadvantaged but determined to succeed and make an impact in the IT industry.
Applicants are required to write an essay of approximately 500 words on why they should be awarded a bursary. The essay should be turned in with the applicant’s personal data, details of their academic and professional history and experience, and contact details of at least two referees. A panel consisting of Women in IT members will evaluate the essays to ensure they meet the selection criteria.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend an interview with the panel. The winners will be announced before the end of November 30, 2015. Each winner will be awarded a bursary fund of ZAR20,000 or ZAR10,000 depending on the amount of subjects required for the year.
Winners will have to undergo a psychometric test, and must be willing to be photographed and interviewed, and supply monthly reports during their studies in 2016.
In 2015, Simphiwe Mashinini was awarded the bursary which helped her cover the cost of her final year study. Since its inception in 2005, Women in IT has awarded 14 bursaries to young female students studying IT-related courses in South African universities.
