Earlier in the week, Google announced plans to empower one million Africans by training them to acquire digital skills through Digify Africa; a training program. These skills would be marketable and digital related ones that are essential to starting businesses, growing and surviving in this ever-changing world of the internet.
Digify Africa is being run by Google and Livity Africa --a non-profit South African organisation -- in a two-training program format ‘Digify Bytes’ to give digital skills to young people looking to develop a digital career and ‘Digify Pro’, a 3-month immersion program for digital specialists.
65 volunteer Googlers from around the world are helping the Livity team with content development, ‘training the trainers’ and, in some cases, delivering the training sessions.
The programmes had already launched in Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa and would be scaled to reach more people in the next 12 months.
Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor, Country Manager, Google Nigeria while speaking on thee announcement said
“The internet is at the heart of economic growth and the Digital Skills Program is aimed at helping more Africans play a part in the digital economy. Everyone can succeed online, start a new business, grow their existing one, or share their passion.”
According to her, by 2020 there would be half a billion internet users in Africa, presenting an opportunity for African businesses and digital entrepreneurs.
Digifyafrica.com is the online-learning portal arm of the program that will house a range of digital skills courses, available to anyone in Africa – free.
The courses are designed to be as “light” as possible to avoid high data consumption. There are nine training courses already available and Google aims to have 50 available by July.
