Social media has become many things to different people. From news sources to a platform to air opinions, seek attention, showcase creativity, advertise goods and services, network and have a good laugh.

Away from the hustle and grind of our everyday lives, it creates an escape and gives people reasons to relieve their tension or get agitated depending on the situation.

I curated a list of some interesting trending topics on social media during the past week; the funny, the sad and the ones that left us almost speechless. And one for the Game of Thrones fans out there because I can.

"Ladies, if he calls you on WhatsApp, he's a cheapskate"-- Toke Makinwa, OAP

Or something like that, watch the video below.

As expected, the video created an uproar on social media.

Some people supported her logic

While some were against it.

And then there were jokes

#Toke, #Whatsapp and #WokeLikeToke have been trending on Twitter ever since. All we have to say about this is, WhatsApp calls are not free.

The prize for excellence in Nigeria?

Pictures of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)'s best graduating medical student receiving a prize award went viral on social media this week.

Word eventually got out that neither the school nor GTBank had anything to do with the prize money. Apparently, the money was a donation from the university's Medical Students Association. But it is social media, nobody cares about the truth, we all just want to rant about something.

Self-driving car?

Last week, a Taxify driver was so extra that his passenger had to drive himself to his destination.

Apparently, the driver was overwhelmed by the damages done to his car and decided to engage in a physical combat with the keke driver, without considering his passenger. Read the thread.

The Lagos state government takes its job very seriously

This one left us speechless. We do hope they can channel this diligence into other areas of the state's economy that need attention. However, some people do not share our optimism.

While some believe justice must be served regardless

For the love of Jollof Rice

Jollof rice has always been a hot topic on social media. And there is an ongoing debate on which country has the best jollof rice. Easy choice, Nigeria, but I am biased. This jollof rice lover, in a Twitter thread, reckons that if you cannot cook it well, do not cook it at all.

Judging by the thread, an association - Nigerian Jollof Association-- for certified jollof rice makers is imperative and aspiring members would be vetted.

For the love of Game of Thrones

Since its season premiere about four weeks ago, Game of Thrones has been one of the trending topics on social media. And as promised, this one is for all the GOT fans out there.

For those who do not get it, we are (not) sorry. If you are a GOT fan and you are in the mood to get agitated and confused, read this.
