Globacom has partnered with Huawei in a bid to provide an ultra high-speed connection for the oil rich-communities of Southern Nigeria through Glo 2.

Glo 2 will be the first fiber submarine cable in Nigeria to land outside the shores of Lagos and it would happen over a period of 18 months. This will follow an upgrade of Glo 1 which will be completed in May 2018. This upgrade will ensure Globacom has the highest transmission speed in Nigeria from Lagos to London.

Speaking about the partnership, the Regional Managing Director, Technical at Globacom, Sanjib Roy affirmed that Glo 2 will ensure high-speed connectivity towards enriching the social and economic activities of the region.

According to Roy, Glo 2 has a maximum capacity of 12 Tb and would be a quantum leap in building the voice and data communications infrastructure in Nigeria. He claimed it would also provide the much need bandwidth and redundancy for terrestrial fiber network to address the menace of fiber cut.

With Glo 2, Globacom is looking forward to expanding to other African nations, thereby making Nigeria the aggregator to international voice and data services.

The benefit of Glo 2 to the destination region include the transfer of a high volume of data, exchange of security and surveillance data while also enabling the oil platforms to use IoT.

The platform would also provide additional capacity for high-speed data growth as it would spawn new Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and eCommerce activities in the region.
