The news:
- Call of Duty: Mobile has given Nigerian players a dedicated server.
- Gameplay in the country has gotten faster since the new server launch was announced on December 1, 2023.
- Some players have reported seeing play speeds of up to 30 milliseconds.
Nigerian players have been clamouring for a dedicated server for some time now. Even Irish pro player, iFerg joined the campaign for a Nigerian Call of Duty: Mobile (CODM) server.
The news was confirmed by South African game publisher Carry1st who secured a $27 million pre-Series B earlier this year.
Nigerian CODM players also confirmed the news saying that they have been able to play at ping speeds as fast as 30 milliseconds (ms). A massive jump from the 90 and 110 ms many Nigerians are already used to.
Despite the slow gameplay, many Nigerians have become pro players at the game and topping multiplayer leaderboards. A player with the user name Tony announced becoming the first Nigerian player to reach number one on CODM’s global multiplayer servers.
CODM which launched in 2019, has an estimated 210 million players globally, with about 30 million to 50 million active monthly players.
The launch of the Nigerian server is an indication of an increasing number of players in the country.
Interestingly, Nigeria is the second country in Africa to get its dedicated server. A server was successfully launched in South Africa in 2022. The server will work for other Southern African countries like Zimbabwe and Namibia.
The newly launched Nigerian server will work for other West African countries like Ghana.
While it has been said that Nigeria is not ready for eSports, mobile gaming could be a leveller. Unlike PC games and console games that require purchasing expensive devices, mobile games are cheaper to play.
