After July 17, 2018, you'll no longer be able to access your chats on Yahoo Messenger as the instant messaging app will be shutting down after 20 years. With the huge popularity of the likes of Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, this news comes as no surprise.
Even though Yahoo Messenger has lost its relevance in the past few years, there's no denying the fact that it was one of the first (if not the first) instant messaging apps many of us interacted with.
With its shut down date about one month away, here's how we remember our days of using Yahoo Messenger, especially before the advent of GSM.
We had the "coolest" Yahoo Messenger user IDs
If your user ID was not "Damsel4real", "Niceoneandtwo", "Nifemi1998" or something in that line, then you used Yahoo Messenger wrongly. Of course, your user ID maybe sounds funny or retarded to you now but you probably had the coolest one among your friends, so it's fine.
We met our first set of foreign friends on Yahoo Messenger
Before Yahoo Messenger chatrooms shut down in 2005, it was one of the first social media platforms. You could access multiple chatrooms and meet random people from different parts of the world.
It was the place some of us first built virtual friendships. Remember using abbreviations like "ASL" used to enquire the age, sex and location of new friends? Ah, memories!

Those times you took detours from running errands for your mum to spend 30 minutes (more or less) chatting with your friends online, and getting into trouble at home afterwards.
For some of us, that was all we did online and the notification buzz was so exhilarating that we could not get enough of it.
